Preparation
I have edited the script to set the prefix:
export PREFIX=${PREFIX-~/opt/gtk}
export PYTHONPATH=$PREFIX/lib/python2.3/site-packages:$PREFIX/lib/python2.3/site-packages/gtk-2.0
